Proof of Modulational Instability of Stokes Waves in Deep Water

چکیده
It is proven that small-amplitude steady periodic water waves with infinite depth are unstable respect to long-wave perturbations. This modulational instability was first observed more than half a century ago by Benjamin and Feir. has been rigorously only in the case of finite depth. We provide completely different self-contained approach prove spectral for both cases. © 2022 Courant Institute Mathematics Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Modulational instability and rogue waves in shallow water models
It is now well known that the focussing nonlinear Schrödinger equation allows plane waves to be modulationally unstable, and at the same time supports breather solutions which are often invoked as models for rogue waves. This suggests a direct connection between modulation instability and the existence of rogue waves. In this chapter we review this connection for a suite of long wave models, su...
متن کاملModulated periodic stokes waves in deep water
Modulated deep-water 1D Stokes waves are considered experimentally and theoretically. Wave trains are modulated in a controlled fashion and their evolution is recorded. Data from repeated laboratory experiments are reproducible near the wave maker, but diverge away from the wave maker. Numerical integration of a perturbed nonlinear Schrodinger equation and an associated linear spectral problem ...
متن کاملModulational instability of dust ion acoustic waves in astrophysical dusty plasmas with non thermal electrons
Propagation of dust ion acoustic waves in plasmas composed of nonthermal distributed electrons and stationary dust particles is investigated. Nonlinear Schrdinger equation is derived to describe small amplitude waves, using the reduction perturbation technique. Modulation instability of dust ion acoustic waves is analysed for this system. Parametric investigation indicates that growth rate of...
متن کاملExcitation of chaotic spin waves through modulational instability.
This Letter reports the first experimental demonstration of chaotic excitations through modulational instability for waves with a repulsive nonlinearity. The experiments were carried out for surface spin waves in a magnetic thin film strip in an active feedback ring configuration. At a low ring gain level, one observes the self-generation of one eigenmode. With an increase in the ring gain, one...
